Penobscot County Conservation Association
September, 2005 Newsletter

President: Woody Higgins

Meeting Date: September 1, 2005.

A Roast Pork dinner will be served at 7pm. The speaker will be Diano Cirgo
from the Natural Resources Council and he will speak on the Plumb Creek proposal around Moosehead Lake.

Included with this letter you will find raffle tickets. Please either sell them to others or buy them yourselves. The proceeds will help support club projects. The winners will be drawn at the November meeting. I will be asking for ticket sellers to help at the Gun Show as we will be selling raffle tickets there. Dates of the Show are 9, 10, 11 September.

It has been a busy summer for the working club members. Cliff Wetmore and his crew have again worked hard at Camp Roosevelt teaching gun safety. Zeke, John, and Louie have done many projects around the club. The bingo crew continues to make this club fund raiser a success. Paul Higgins 3rd, with my help, repointed and recapped the fireplace chimney. There will be gutter put on the parking lot side of the clubhouse and the back door and floor will be rebuilt. Lane Construction has, with our blessing, placed their office by the pond and in return for this will be placing a tar curb around the clubhouse on the parking lot side, patching the parking lot and putting fill around the sides. We have a new pole line to the club and as soon as the telephone company moves the phone line the pole in the middle of the parking lot will be gone.

Charlie Rumsey will be asking for help with the Gun Show at the meeting and will have a sign up sheet. Please step up and help. This is one of the clubs most important fund raisers. September 9, 10, 11.

There will be a work day at the Stetson Camp on September 24th starting at 8am. The hunters’ breakfast will be held there on October 1st starting at 6am.
This will be followed by a skeet shoot later that morning so bring your shotgun and shells.

We will start the big deer contest at the September meeting so we can get all you hunters signed up whether you bow or rifle hunt. Tony will have the particulars at the meeting.

There will be a Hunter Safety course, gun, held at the Club on October 15-16. Registration is at 7am on the 15th and costs $3.00. Bring your lunch and anyone under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. There is also a Bow Hunter safety course being held on September 24 & 25.

We now have our own web site set up and run by Board member, Jason Moffitt, and we are asking all members with email to give us your address so we cut the cost of the newsletter as we can send it to you by email. Please send an email to Jason (webmaster@conservationassociation.org) and ask to be placed on the mailing list. The address for our website is http://www.conservationassociation.org. We will be posting all activities and club functions at this site as well as the newsletter.

Greenland Point is now owned by the Greenland Point Center, Inc. We are close to having 501(c)(3) status for the center. The PCCA board approved a $20,000.00 donation to the center in June. This donation will be given in four payments of $5,000.00 over four years.

The PCCA has adopted a cabin to maintain. Zeke Leighton and John Anderson will be going there to work on the cabin soon, if you can help, talk to either one and help out. There will be a work day at Greenland Point on October 2nd and several club members will be going so again if you are interested in helping let either me or Al Faust know. (Woody 945-6853, Al 223-5761)

At the last Board meeting we approved a three step plan to improve and repair the Club facilities in Brewer. The first item is to repair the rear door and floor and this will be done in the next several weeks. Step two is to shore up and side the barn and this will be done next year. Step three will be to repair and reside the clubhouse. This will be the last step as the first two need to be done quickly. All this work will be done by outside contractors on a bid basis. Board member, John Anderson, is looking into having a generator installed at the club for backup power in case of electricity loss. John will be reporting on this to the board at the September meeting. Zeke Leighton is helping with this.

The next Board meeting is on September 15th at 6pm at the clubhouse. Remember any club member is welcome to attend any Board meeting.
