Presidential Ramblings:
Jay Munson

Can you believe it? Here we are just a few days away from another deer season. I hope everyone gets a chance to get out there and spend some quality time in the woods with family and friends.

Speaking of hunting, this year’s hunter safety course was a huge success. During the designated registration period, it didn’t seem as though the flow of people would subside. A class that Tony Richards thought would consist of about 45 people ended up having 81 people in attendance. After Tony did a little scrambling for additional supplies the rest of the weekend went off without a hitch. I would like to thank Tony and all of the members who participated as instructors this year. With out you people, we would not be the club that we are.

I would like to take a moment to recognize one of our members who is also a board member. This past month Bill Peters was lucky enough to win a Duck’s Unlimited Remington 11-87 20 gauge shotgun. This package also included a hard case, 3 screw in chokes and a box of shells. The value of this package is somewhere between $900.00 and $1000.00 dollars. Bill was generous enough to donate this package to the club to use as a fund raiser. Bill, on behalf of the club, I would like to thank you for this generous gift. It is this type of generosity that makes this club what it is.

Home on the Range – Turkey Shoot

The PCCA annual Turkey Shoot will be held Thursday November 2nd, prior to the supper meeting. The shoot will be held from 4:30 until 5:45 with an entry fee of $1.00 and an unlimited number of times you can enter. PCCA will supply both the guns and the ammunition for this shoot. There will be two types of targets, with the high score of each target type winning a turkey. Please join in and try you luck!

Supper Meeting: Nov 2nd, 6:00 P.M. at the clubhouse

PLEASE NOTE: As stated at the end of last season, the dues for the 2006 – 2007 membership must be paid before the start of the supper meeting. Anyone attending the supper meeting who has not paid will be required to pay the dues before purchasing a meal ticket. As a reminder, the dues are $25.00 for the year. As of Oct 30th anyone who is not current with their dues will be placed on an inactive list and will not longer receive a newsletter and will be required to pay the new member fee of $35.00 to be reinstated as a current member.

The supper will be Lasagna with salad and rolls. The speaker will be Lee Canter of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. Lee is the department’s deer biologist and will be speaking about the state’s deer population and the condition of the deer’s habitat.

Please plan to attend the meeting for a great meal and a chance to catch up with some old friends.

At the supper meeting I will be asking the general membership if there is anyone interested in becoming the club historian. This was discussed at the board meeting and after hearing Paul Uttormark’s presentation last month it was decided that this position has not been given the attention it deserves. If anyone has the time and desire to help out with this please let me know at the supper meeting.

Also at the supper meeting we will be drawing the winning ticket for the Old Town canoe and the gift certificate for Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Other Notes:

An issue was brought up at the board meeting that needs to be addressed. Any land and/or facility owned by the Penobscot County Conservation Association are available for individual use, i.e. hiking, hunting, camping on our land. These facilities are not to be used for organized functions either by members or non-members. Any member wishing to use any of the facilities for such an event must get specific permission from the board and provide evidence of liability insurance policy for no less than one million dollars. As of this date we have only one member who meets these requirements and has permission from the board to use the facilities in Brewer.

On a more positive note, it was also discussed at the board meeting that we should look into other avenues of income for the club. One such avenue is to start renting the clubhouse for such activities as wedding receptions, anniversary and birthday parties. Before we venture any further into this idea, Jan Logan has volunteered to look into the feasibility of this and we would also need to come to the membership for a vote to change the club By-Laws that currently prohibit us from doing this. This will be discussed further at the supper meeting.

Club Activities:

We will be hosting a hunters breakfast this year for the first time. Nancy Hatch has taken on this project with the help of some of the other members. If you would like to help her in the kitchen please let her know. If you are unable to help, please try to attend as it should prove to be a good time. The date Nancy has picked is Nov 18th and breakfast will be served starting at 4:00 A.M. We would like to ask that if anyone who has a connection with a food supplier (Hannaford, Sam’s, Wal-Mart) might try to obtain some food donations. We would also take food donations from any other member who is able to. Please coordinate all donations through Nancy.

Tony Richards is heading the big deer contest again this year. If you have not done so, see Tony to get signed up. You need to be in the contest prior to harvesting your deer.

Charlie will be holding this season’s first fun shoot on Oct 29th at the clubs range. The shoot will be the Pepsi challenge, hope to see you there.
